Excerpt of a letter dated July 15, 1796 from William Tomison at Edmonton House to George Sutherland.

"PS. I am very much obliged to you for the great quantity of sugar, Tea, coffee, etc. sent up last autumn. Thank God for Health! When I wish to get merry I go to the river and when I wish to drink Tea, I go to the bushes: I am sorry 34 years servitude should not deserve better treatment. A Canadian clerk has tea and sugar found him and so might I was not the Companys benevolence made abuse of."

"Since my last letter in March I underwent much anxiety, the Scurvy made such ravages that disabled all my Labouring hands only two were left free, fit for duty, whose time was taken up attending the Sick. All business was at a stand for a long time, and I have many miserable objects now crawling around me upon three and four legs."
